The current Swansea City player rankings as key stars emerge under Steve Cooper but forgotten men fall deeper into the mire

Steve Cooper has enjoyed a fine start to life as Swansea City head coach.

The Swans are yet to lose under their new boss having claimed seven points from their opening three Championship fixtures while they also progressed into the second round of the Carabao Cup by beating Northampton Town.

Despite being fairly consistent when it comes to team selection in the league, Cooper admits he'll have to utilise those currently on the fringes during the course of the campaign.

So with four games gone this season, here's where each Swansea player currently stands.

THE MEN KEY TO COOPER'S PLANS

Freddie Woodman

The Newcastle United loanee has established himself as the club's first choice goalkeeper, and his penalty heroics at Derby helped to make him something of a favourite with fans.

Joe Rodon

Continued this season where he left off last term. The central defender is admired by his boss and at just 21 years of age will only get better.

Mike van der Hoorn

Provides a youthful looking side with some much needed experience. He no longer wears the captain's armband, but the Dutchman is a hugely influential figure in this current Swansea set-up.

Jay Fulton

The Scot has started to deliver his best form under the new regime and has been hugely impressive in the opening weeks of the campaign. It's early days, but this could be the year where Swansea see the best of Fulton.

Matt Grimes

Appointed captain, Grimes will be a mainstay in the starting XI this term.

Bersant Celina

He's yet to show his top form this season, but it's still early days. The Kosovan can be the influential figure Swansea crave at the business end of the pitch when it comes to scoring goals and creating opportunities for others.

Borja Baston

What a turnaround it's been for the Spaniard. He's started all three league games this season and has netted three goals. Looks set to be the Swans' main striker under Cooper.

Andre Ayew

As above. The Ghanaian could yet leave the club, but his efforts against Northampton Town and Preston were superb. A fully fit and firing Ayew could be absolutely lethal in the Championship.

Connor Roberts

First choice right-back for both club and country. Roberts enjoyed a fine season under Graham Potter and will hope to continue his progress under the current set-up.

Jake Bidwell

The man likely to get the most minutes out of Swansea's six summer signings. Swansea desperately needed a left-back following Martin Olsson's exit, and former Everton, Brentford and Queens Park Rangers man Bidwell has slotted in seamlessly so far.

MIDDLE OF THE ROAD

Nathan Dyer

Brings some much needed experience to proceedings, although his progress was halted as he suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Preston. Here's hoping it's nothing too serious.

George Byers

Had to settle for a place on the bench in the league outings with Derby and Preston but showed his worth against the latter, scoring his side's second after coming off the bench having scored against Northampton four days earlier. Still a big player for the club.

Ben Wilmot

At only 19 years of age, the Watford loanee has his best years ahead of him. He's yet to feature in the league for the Swans, with his sole appearance coming in the cup, although he certainly impressed against the Cobblers.

Yan Dhanda

Came on as a sub at Derby and started in the cup against Northampton. He'll be an important squad player this season, but he needs to do more to become a regular.

Kyle Naughton

Replaced Dyer at the death in the win over Hull and was handed the captaincy on his 150th appearance for the club against Northampton. With Bidwell and Roberts as first choice full-backs, Naughton is now more likely to be used as defensive cover rather than a starter.

Wayne Routledge

Was unavailable against Hull due to injury but featured for the first time this season in the cup win over Northampton. Won't play week-in week-out, but Routledge's experience will be vital during the course of Cooper's debut campaign with the Swans.

Kristoffer Peterson

Showed encouraging flashes on his debut against Hull and probably needs time to get to grips with what is a notoriously physical division. Peterson's versatility means we'll no doubt see a lot of him this season.

Sam Surridge

The striker has made two cameos off the bench in the league and played the full match in the cup against Northampton. Given his lack of game time after Christmas last season, Surridge no doubt needs to get minutes under his belt.

Aldo Kalulu

Has started against Derby and Preston, although he was withdrawn after 68 minutes and 45 minutes respectively in those fixtures. Needs time to get up to full fitness and adapt to the league having moved from France.

THE OUTCASTS/FORGOTTEN MEN

Steven Benda

Signed a new contract earlier this year although he's been unable to be involved under Cooper due to injury. His time will come.

Tom Carroll

As with Benda, only in this list due to injury. The central midfielder made his long-awaited return to action by turning out for the Under-23s against Aston Villa on Monday night. The Englishman could yet become a key figure under Cooper.

Erwin Mulder

Yet to feature for the Swans this season and his only appearance in a matchday 18 was for the cup win against Northampton.

Declan John

The Wales international impressed in the Carabao Cup win over Northampton, but that's been his only taste of action this season. Has a tough job on his hands when it comes to ousting Bidwell from the starting XI. Yet to be included in a league squad.

Kristoffer Nordfeldt

Named on the bench for Swansea's three league games but played the full 90 against Northampton in the cup. The Swedish shot stopper looks to be second choice at present, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for him.

Barrie McKay

McKay doesn't appear to be fancied by the current boss having been left out of the squads for the games with Derby and Preston. Started in the cup but was shown up by Jordon Garrick who looked remarkably lively when he replaced the Scot in the second half.
