Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) claimed his third stage win of the 2025 Giro d'Italia on stage 5 to Matera, extending his lead over Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) to 17 seconds in a tough uphill sprint.
The Dane, who won stages 1 and 3 in Albania, was pushed to the limit on the testing run-in, with Edoardo Zambanini (Bahrain Victorious) threading his way through the sprint to lunge at the line and nearly snatch the victory. Tom Pidcock (Q36.5) was third.
Pedersen has another flat finish to face on stage 6 to Napoli before the biggest challenge to his maglia rosa comes on Friday with the first major summit finish at Tagliacozzo.
Roglič, second at 17 seconds, is the favourite to move into the pink jersey this weekend, as Pedersen's lead-out man, Mathias Vacek, sits in third place overall at 24 seconds.
With another bunch sprint, the GC standings haven't changed much. American Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) is in fourth at 31 seconds.
McNulty's team leader, Juan Ayuso, is sixth at 35 seconds. Another UAE rider, young Mexican Isaac Del Toro, lies in fourth place at 32 seconds, having grabbed four bonus seconds on stage 4.
Max Poole (Picnic-PostNL) is seventh at 43 seconds, one second up on Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain-Victorious), while Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling) is ninth at 46 seconds.
Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) rounds out the top ten, 50 seconds off the lead. Orluis Aular (Movistar) is the last rider within one minute of Pedersen in 18th place.
Other Giro d'Italia contenders close to Roglič and Pedersen include Simon Yates (Visma-Lease a Bike) at 52 seconds, Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) at 56 seconds, Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) at 1:01 and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) at 1:07.
