The curious case of Chris Maguire - has he played his last game for Sunderland?

Sunderland's big for automatic promotion took another hammer blow following defeat away at Wigan Athletic.

Lee Johnson's side were void of any creativity going forward - bar Aiden McGeady, who set up Charlie Wyke's opener.

The Black Cats have been overly reliant on the 35-year-old to produce in big games this season and they're crying out for a spark on the right-hand side.

Jordan Jones and Lynden Gooch have both operated on that side in recent weeks but have struggled for consistency - with Jones struggling to affect the game in the second half against the Latics.

One man who was left out of the squad - not for the first time this season - was Chris Maguire.

The 32-year-old has been on the periphery of things since Johnson took over at the Stadium of Light but looked as though he'd resurrected his career on Wearside.

Maguire scored a late equaliser at Crewe and was the architect for Charlie Wyke's winner against Swindon Town.

Coupled with injuries and some impressive cameos from the bench, Maguire was handed a surprise start at Wembley for the Papa John's Trophy final, but couldn't find his groove as the Black Cats struggled against Tranmere Rovers.

The former Oxford United man was hooked just after the hour mark.

Since then, Maguire has featured just three times from the bench and has not been included in the Black Cats matchday squads against Peterborough, Charlton and Wigan.

His inclusion for the U23's suggest fitness isn't a concern and with just a few months on his contract remaining, it looks as though he's played his final game for the Black Cats.

Unless something dramatic happens in the final stages of the season, it'll be a disappointing end to his career on Wearside having popped up at vital moments for Sunderland since he arrived in 2018.
