The culture secretary and her department have left Elon Musk’s X – here’s why

  • Culture secretary Lisa Nandy announced she is leaving X , stating the platform "favours abuse and misinformation" and "isn’t healthy for our democracy or our communities".
  • Ms Nandy confirmed that her department, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, will also cease using X.
  • This makes DCMS the second government department to leave X, following the Attorney General’s Office.
  • The attorney general, Lord Hermer, previously defended his decision to ban his office from X, citing that the platform "constantly descends to racism and misogyny".
  • The move comes after prime minister Sir Keir Starmer accused Elon Musk of trying to "whip up division" in the UK following violent protests related to a student's murder and subsequent racist rioting in Belfast.
