The Crystal Palace star who could save the club from relegation and it's not Wilfried Zaha

Spanish shot-stopper Vincente Guaita will need to be at his very best - just as he was against Southampton on Saturday - if he is to help Crystal Palace steer well clear of relegation this season.

That's according to former Tottenham star turned BBC pundit Garth Crooks who has praised the 33-year-old for his remarkable performance at Selhurst Park on the opening day of the season.

Twice he was called upon to pull off outstanding reflex saves to deny Ralph Hasenhuttl's side from drawing level.

And that won his side the game, says Crooks, as he named Guaita in his team of the week.

He was also impressed by Wilfried Zaha, a player at the centre of plenty of transfer speculation in recent weeks.

Zaha's goal was the difference between the two sides on paper and he came a marginal offside call away from making it 2-0 on the day.

"Wilfried Zaha may have scored the only goal against Southampton - but Vicente Guaita won the match," said Garth Crooks, speaking to BBC Sport.

"I saw Guaita produce some very shaky performances towards the end of last season and once Palace were mathematically safe, Zaha's displays dipped.

"Fortunately, both men were in a very different mood against Southampton," he said.

"If Palace are going to avoid another relegation fight, then Guaita needs to be at his best and Zaha has to score far more goals in order to justify his price tag."
