Netflix drama The Crown will end after fifth series confirms creator

Netflix's royal drama The Crown will end after its fifth series.

In an interview with The Sun, The Crown's creator Peter Morgan said that the final series will cover British history up until 2003, with Imelda Staunton taking over as the Queen from Olivia Colman.

Morgan, 56, said: “At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons.

“But now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop.”

This means that while the Netflix hit. which is watched by more than 70million people worldwide, will cover the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, more modern scandals like Prince Andrew's involvement with Jeffery Epstein and Harry and Meghan's exit from the senior royals gang, will not be covered by the show.

There's still two series left for viewers to look forward to, though, as Colman's run ends in series four, covering 1977 to 1990 and Staunton's reign will bookend the show.

About the third actress to play the Queen in the show, Morgan added: "An astonishing talent… taking The Crown into the 21st Century."

Series three of The Crown, Colman's debut series as Elizabeth II, was partially filmed in Wales and covered the Aberfan disaster of 1966 and the investiture of Prince Charles in 1969.

The fourth series is currently being filmed and is likely to be released later this year.
