The Crown turned Manchester into 1980s New York for pivotal Princess Diana scenes - and it looks amazing

Stevenson Square has been transformed into 1980s New York for the new series of The Crown.

The scenes feature rising star Emma Corrin, who plays the late Princess Diana in the award-winning Netflix series.

Emma, 24, as the future Princess of Wales, turned heads as she strolled through Manchester's Northern Quarter in a colourful checked suit with white heels.

And she looked eerily similar to Diana as she gazed through the limo window for scenes showing her being driven by police escort.

The actress wore a black puffer jacket over the top to ward off the February chill for the scenes, which featured New York street signs and yellow taxis.

Emma is filming for the fourth series of The Crown, created by Peter Morgan, which is expected to be screened in November.

Princess Diana made a solo trip to New York in 1989, visiting the Henry Street Settlement that was a halfway house for homeless families in the lower east side of Manhatten.

During her visit to the settlement, she met previously homeless mothers and chatted to pre-schoolers, apparently tying one child's shoelace.

It was on this same trip that she famously paid a visit to young AIDS patients at a Harlem Hospital.

She reportedly hugged and stroked children suffering from AIDS and questioned a doctor about the disease.

Emma said when her casting was announced last year: "I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal.

"Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring.

"To be given the chance to explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice!”

The drama about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II covers Elizabeth's life from her younger years to the 21st century with new actors cast every two seasons.

Claire Foy portrayed the Queen in the first two seasons and for the third and fourth seasons Olivia Colman took over.

Imelda Staunton will succeed Colman for the fifth and final season.

The fourth season will be set during Margaret Thatcher's premiership.
