The Crown season 4 trailer shows The Queen in icy face-off with Margaret Thatcher

The new trailer for The Crown season 4 has whipped fans up into a right royal frenzy.

With just a couple of weeks to go until the hit drama returns to Netflix, viewers are promised the introduction of two very different iconic women from UK history: Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana.

A first look at the new advert shows a tense face-off between The Queen, played by Olivia Coleman, and Gillian Anderson's much anticipated take on the country's first female prime minister.

The popular programme returns in November and tells the story of a season of change for the royals family.

Much of the new trailer teases the icy relationship between The Queen and her new Conservative PM.

We see the controversial leader prepare for her audience with the monarch, as we hear her say: "I think we have enough respect for one another personally to ask ourselves one of the bigger questions woman to woman.

"We are the same age after all, just six months between us."

The Queen responds: "Really? And who is the senior?"

A stern Thatcher replies: "I am, ma'am."

The new episodes will see The Queen take issue with the new prime minister's increasingly divisive policies, which saw rising unemployment, wars abroad, and issues around apartheid.

"Joblessness, recession, crises. It's a dangerous game to make enemies left, right and centre," notes The Queen.

However, Thatcher is not fazed, responding: "What if one is comfortable with having enemies?"

Expect some uncomfortable exchanges between these two powerful women!

Elsewhere, Lady Diana Spencer takes to the world stage in the new episodes as the courtship of Charles, Prince of Wales (Josh O'Connor) and his young bride, played by newcomer Emma Corrin, is portrayed.

We see flashes of their burgeoning relationship, but it becomes increasingly clear that Diana is struggling with her place in the House of Windsor.

A desperate Princess Diana tells The Queen."All I want is to be loved that's all any of us want from you."

However, the gulf between Charles and Diana only continues to widen as he remains in love with Camilla Parker Bowles (Emerald Fennell), who he was forced away from by his family in the previous season.

Princess Margaret (Helena Bonham Carter) notes to her sister in the trailer that if Diana cannot "bend" to fit into what the family expects of her, then she will "break".

The ten episodes will also feature major events such as the assassination of Lord Louis Mountbatten ( Charles Dance ) by the IRA, Princess Margaret's growing health issues, a break-in at Buckingham Palace, the Falklands War, and Diana ascending to global stardom.

The Crown season 4 is released on Netflix on November 15, 2020.
