The Crown's most controversial scenes as explosive season five faces backlash

Friends of King Charles III have called for a boycott of The Crown after claiming that some of the scenes in the Netflix original are "complete nonsense" and "entirely made up".

The fifth series comes just months after the Queen passed away aged 96.

In the upcoming season, trailers reveal that it will delve into some of the biggest scandals that hit the royal family, many of them involving the new King.

One of the most controversial being when Charles, who was Prince of Wales at the time, was seen plotting to expose the Queen and suggested that she should have been jailed.

John Major, who was Prime Minister at the time, called the storyline a "barrel-load of nonsense".

Royal circles have claimed that the show "smears the new monarch and is set to be part of a double-whammy Netflix assault on the Royal family ".

The release of Harry and Meghan's documentary is set to be launched in December just weeks after season five of The Crown on November 9.

Royal author and expert Robert Jobson told MailOnline: "It's a work of fiction, but of course, people are getting upset because certain people think it's true, certain generations think it's got more credence than it has."

The show's creators have always insisted that the show is a drama and a fictionalised version of what may have happened behind the palace's walls.

A spokesperson for The Crown said: "The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events."

As well as the latest season causing an uproar, previous episodes have also ruffled royal feathers.

We take a look at some of the most controversial scenes from the show.

Charles and Camilla

In season four of The Crown, Charles was seen sneaking around with his now-wife Camilla Parker Bowles the night before his wedding to Princess Diana.

This has been totally dismissed by royal experts and was described as "categorically untrue".

Charles and Queen Camilla started dating back in 1971, but after their short-lived romance, they remained friends.

Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973 and Charles and Diana said "I do" in 1981.

There were rumours that Camilla and Charles got back together in the seventies, but the King remains adamant that they didn't rekindle until after the breakdown of his marriage with Diana.

Journalist and author David Dimbleby, who wrote a book titled Prince of Wales, wrote that the couple had "virtually no contact between 1981 and 1986.

He said the pair only mingled in social circles - but never anything more than a friendly chat.

Charles and Diana's Australia Tour

One of the most poignant storylines in season four was Diana and Charles' tour of Australia which saw the couple's relationship land on thin ice.

During the tour in 1983, Charles allegedly branded his wife "pathetic" during a conversation with Camilla.

Arthur Edwards, who has worked as a royal photographer across the decades, said this wasn't true, and in fact, the couple "couldn't keep their hands off each other."

Another scene, which sees Charles shout at Diana to "pull herself together" as she struggled to climb Table Rock was also discounted as fiction.

However, footage of the climb shows that Diana's struggles were down to her poor choice of footwear and outfit.

The couple also bought their eldest son Prince William on tour with them, which was said to have created arguments between the Prince and Princess.

But bringing William with them was hailed as "revolutionary" by royal fans, and the tour schedule didn't have to be changed as the show portrays.

Royal author Robert Jobson, who spoke to people who were there on the farmstead where the family were staying, insisted that the couple were "very happy".

Diana's battle with post-natal depression and an eating disorder was also documented in the show - and this was true.

The Princess of Wales struggled with her mental health as she adjusted to life as a member of the royal family.

Charles' jealousy of Diana

After Diana stole the hearts of the Australians during their tour, The Crown's Josh O'Connor, who played Prince Charles, portrayed the King to be jealous.

At one point in the show, a furious Charles tells Diana, played by Emma Corrin: "Thanks to you, people are laughing at me and booing in my face.

However, the King joked about his wife's popularity in real life, joking that he could have done with having two wives to walk down either side of the street.

Diana also addressed her husband's jealousy, saying: "He took it out on me. He was jealous. I understood the jealousy, but I couldn't explain that I didn't ask for it."

In an attempt to heal their alleged unhappy marriage, Diana performed on stage with professional dancer Wayne Sleep for the King's birthday.

But it didn't amuse The Crown's Charles who spat: "A grotesque, mortifying display had nothing to do with me or my happiness.

The Daily Mail's royal expert Richard Kay agreed that at this event, the Prince "was not terribly impressed" and that "he thought it was showing off".

The Queen and Prince Phillip's involvement in the marriage

The Queen, played by Olivia Coleman, and Prince Phillip, played by Tobias Menzies, both appeared to pull out all the stops to keep Charles and Camilla together.

In one scene the Queen told Charles and Diana that their marriage can "not be allowed to fail".

Phillip also even threatened Diana over her pleas to leave Charles, adding that if she did "it would not end well for her".

This naturally added fuel to the fire of the conspiracy theories that surround the late Princess's death, which many viewers said was a step too far.

In fact, Phillip was said to try and help the couple work through their differences - and that he sympathised with Diana as he knew what it was like entering the family.

According to experts, The Queen also wrote to Diana and advised her to divorce her son.

Prince Phillip and his mum

Season three depicts Prince Phillip's cold relationship with his mum Princess Alice of Battenberg, who was a nun.

After the Queen rescued her from Greece, he seemed to avoid wanting to spend time with her.

Historian Hugo Vickers insisted that this was not the case and that Prince Phillip tried very hard to get her into the palace and put her up in a lavish room - not the dingy one in the show.
