The Crown's Claire Foy calls portraying the Queen for the Netflix drama an 'honour'

The Crown's Claire Foy has said that it was an "honour" to portray the Queen in the Netflix series, saying that she thought of her as a "mother and grandmother".

The 38-year-old actress, who played the young monarch in the first two seasons of The Crown, has shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Queen.

Speaking during the Toronto Film Festival this week, Claire described the Queen as "incredible".

"I think she was an incredible monarch. She united people and she was a massive symbol of continuity and dignity and grace.

"My main feeling is just thinking about her as a mother and a grandmother and a great-grandmother, really, and I'm very honoured to have been a teeny tiny, small part of her story," she told the BBC.

The Queen passed away peacefully aged 96 in Balmoral, Scotland last Thursday.

The Crown follows Her Majesty's life over the decades with a fictional twist, starting in the late 1940s.

Claire, who passed the baton to Olivia Coleman, performed the Queen's early years - including her wedding in 1947 to the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Olivia, 48, went on to play a more accurate Queen Elizabeth in the 1970s.

Following the passing of Her Majesty, The Crown has soared to the top spot on Netflix's "most watched" list.

Season five of The Crown will be able to view on the streaming service in November this year.

The sixth season is currently being filmed, and was put on hold following the news of the Queen's passing.

Filming was suspended for one day as a "mark of respect to the late monarch".

Production will also stop on the day of the Queen's state funeral on Monday 19 September.

A Netflix spokesperson said: "As a mark of respect, filming on The Crown was suspended today. Filming will also be suspended on the day of Her Majesty The Queen's funeral."

Ahead of Her Majesty's death, Netflix had allegedly already put together a plan for what should happen if she passed during filming.

In 2016, one of the show's creators, Stephen Daldry said that the cast would take a break from production in the event of her death, adding "it would be a simple tribute and a mark of respect. She's a global figure and it's what we should do."

Shortly after the news broke, the show's writer Peter Morgan said: "The Crown is a love letter to her and I've nothing to add for now, just silence and respect. I expect we will stop filming out of respect too."
