The Crown Queen actress Olivia Colman joins Marvel Cinematic Universe

Olivia Colman, the Oscar-winning actress who portrayed the Queen in the Netflix series The Crown, is to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has been confirmed.

Colman played the Queen in seasons 3 and 4 of the historical drama television series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. During her tenure in the role of queen, the show covered the period between 1964 and 1990, beginning season 3 with Harold Wilson's election as prime minister and ending with her Silver Jubilee. It included the 1969 Investiture of Prince Charles as Prince of Wales, the deaths of the Duke of Windsor and Winston Churchill, and Princess Margaret's affair with Roddy Llewellyn.

The fourth season covered Margaret Thatcher's 11-year run as prime minister and introduced Lady Diana Spencer. Events depicted included Diana's wedding to Charles, the Falklands War, Michael Fagan's break-in at Buckingham Palace, Lord Mountbatten's funeral and Mrs Thatcher's departure from office, as well as the marital difficulties of Charles and Diana.

The 48-year-old is now set to appear alongside Don Cheadle and Samuel L Jackson in the forthcoming Marvel series Secret Invasion, due for release next year. The series sees Jackson once again reprise his character of Avengers boss Nick Fury as he deals with a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls, who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

“This is my war, alone,” Jackson is heard to say, in a short trailer released at the Disney D23 Expo on Saturday. “I’m the last person standing between them and what they really want.”

“You’re in no shape for this fight that lies before us,” Colman tells him.

The trailer also features appearances from Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos, Don Cheadle as James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes and Martin Freeman. Secret Invasion will begin streaming in 2023.

Colman won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2018 for her portrayal of Queen Anne in The Favourite.
