‘The Crown’ experiences spike in viewership after Oprah Winfrey’s Meghan Markle interview

The power of Oprah Winfrey continues to reverberate — even on platforms she’s not doing business with.

Netflix’s “The Crown” is reaping the rewards from the media maven’s bombshell interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

Analysis of viewing data from streaming service aggregator Reelgood showed that the landmark Emmy-winning series saw its daily streaming spike to double its usual daily audience following the much hyped, and much seen, interview with the embattled Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

“Reelgood looked at the data to see just how big of an effect the interview actually had on recent viewership for the show and found that, at one point, it doubled the typical volume of daily streams for the series,” marketing strategist Maria Santos said.

The company also noted viewing spikes after key “real life” crown moments, such as Queen Elizabeth issuing a statement regarding racism allegations, which came out of the exclusive chat that aired on CBS on March 7.

The Winfrey interview followed “The Crown” garnering four wins at this year’s Golden Globe Awards on Feb. 28.

The latest season of the Peter Morgan-created historical drama revisits the drama-fueled Prince Charles and Princess Diana era.

The runaway royals revealed to Winfrey that they both watched the series during the interview that drew more than 17 million viewers in America during its first airing.

The explosive two-hour sit-down included Markle’s admission of suicidal thoughts and the revelation of racist acts inside and outside the palace.

The appearance has rocked the royal dynasty, leading the monarchy to launch investigations.

According to Reelgood, “The Crown” rose to be the ninth-ranked Netflix show among the 300 streaming service choices on its platform.

While Netflix has many high-profile deals with marquis names such as Barack and Michelle Obama, Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Winfrey has an exclusive partnership with Apple’s streaming service.
