It looks like Elon Musk may have accidentally revealed that he was operating his mother Maye Musk‘s account on X. Recent activity on the platform led many users to believe he was the one posting from her profile. This is not the first time he has faced this kind of scrutiny, as he was previously exposed for posting from an account that posed as his young son.
The confusion began when the Maye Musk account quote-tweeted and responded to a post from Elon Musk. In the original post, Elon claimed his grandmother was a housekeeper in England when he was younger. Per Brobible, the Maye Musk account then tweeted, “Your mom told me she was cleaning toilets in a Liverpool boarding house as a child. When I met her in 1966, she was sewing linings for a furrier in a small windowless room behind the store.”
The problem is that Maye Musk is his mother. By writing from the perspective of someone speaking to Elon about his own mother, the account created a clear inconsistency that users quickly picked up on. Since Elon has a known history of roleplaying as family members on social media, many concluded he simply forgot which account he was logged into.
Elon Musk’s habit of using alt accounts is catching up with him
The reaction online was fast and harsh. One viral post on X read, “Elon Musk accidentally revealing his mom’s account is one of his alt’s means that he has both impersonated his own infant child and mother online.” Another user wrote, “Getting caught posting from an alt account that’s supposed to be your own mother. I’d feel sad for his loneliness and neediness if he was literally anyone else on the planet.”
Another user summed up the situation on X by pointing out the shift in perspective, saying, “Elon’s mom caught posting from the perspective of Elon’s dad. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to assume Elon is posting on Twitter as both his parents & was on the wrong alt. The cringe deepens daily with this one.” Musk has also recently faced serious criticism over his handling of sensitive government data at DOGE, adding to a growing list of controversies surrounding him.

This is not a minor slip. Mixing up accounts while trying to pose as your own family members to back up a personal story is a significant oversight, especially for someone of his profile and resources. The fact that the post was meant to support a personal claim Elon had made about his family history makes it even more notable. Managing multiple fake personas is always risky, and this incident shows exactly how quickly things can unravel.

What makes this situation stand out even more is the pattern it fits into. Elon is one of the most followed people on the platform he owns, and yet he appears to be using hidden accounts to quietly shape how people see him. For someone who regularly talks about free speech and transparency, being caught managing secret family accounts sends a very different message to the public.
Yeah these do seem written by Elon tbh https://t.co/Vzu2f30aX0 pic.twitter.com/vu3ENxglm3

As of writing, Elon has not publicly addressed the speculation or the accusations that he was pretending to be his mother, and has stayed completely silent on the incident. He has also been at the center of other personal controversies, including a bombshell claim about fathering a child with a Japanese pop star that raised serious questions about his character.
This situation is a clear example of why using burner accounts is almost always a bad idea for high-profile public figures. The risk of being exposed is high, and when it happens, the fallout tends to be very public and very embarrassing. Whether Elon chooses to address this or simply let it fade away, the incident has already left a mark on how many people view his online behavior.
