The crazy story of how Herschel Walker chose to play football at Georgia

Herschel Walker, accompanied by Archie Manning and Steve Spurrier, were present at SEC Media Days this week promoting a new film “Saturdays in the South: A History of SEC Football.”

The three SEC legends spoke to the media, and Herschel provided the world with a little insight into how he settled on playing collegiate football at Georgia instead of going to Clemson, Southern Cal or joining the military.

It started with a coin flip – go to college or join the military.

Lucky for us, football won. “Crap,” Herschel recalled saying.

Then, there was another coin flip – Georgia or Clemson.

Georgia won.

And then another – Georgia or Southern Cal.

Georgia won.

But he was not done yet. Walker then put all those names in a bag and pulled one.

And when he pulled Georgia from the bag, he knew it was time to settle on the in-state Bulldogs.

“And at that time, I said I was going to Georgia.”

And that’s the story of how Herschel Walker, a quiet kid from Wrightsville, ended up going to the University of Georgia, where he would go on to become the greatest player in the history of college football.

“Sometimes when you’re naive and stupid, God will take care of you,” Walker said.
