The coziest and cutest highlights of Wholesome Direct 2026

Wholesome Direct 2026 is here, and with it comes a roundup of cozy, relaxing, and adorable games for players to look forward to in the near future.

While Summer Game Fest showcased some of the biggest upcoming titles in the AAA space, Wholesome Direct hands the spotlight over to indie developers with smaller projects. Here are the highlights of this year’s event:

(Be sure to wishlist the games you’re interested in to help support the devs!)

Dungeon Tourists (TBA)

Dungeon Tourists, developed by KMLO, is a laid back exploration game where you and three friends (who are all adorable cats) take a tour of a procedurally generated dungeon to snap pictures and complete your photo collection. Fans of Pokemon Snap will want to check this game out, especially as there are no pressures like timers or objectives.

Usagi Shima (October 2026)

Usagi Shima: Bunny Island may just be the cutest game from this year’s Wholesome Direct. The objective is simple: create a paradise for bunnies on their very own island. Players can decorate the island, get to know the bunnies that inhabit it, and even dress them up in adorable outfits.

The hand drawn art style of Usagi Shima gives the entire game a calming effect, which alongside a huge catalog of decorative items, allows players to curate the perfect island.

Beastfolk Barber [Project Salon] TBA)

Making smalltalk with your barber might sound like torture, but Beastfolk Barber (listed under Project Salon on its Steam page) makes it a calming and fun way to interact with characters. Set in a city full of Beastfolk, players must help them find the perfect haircut based on their reactions, while conversations reveal more of what’s going on in their lives.

Patience is a Virtue (TBA)

Investigate a small-town supernatural mystery in Patience is a Virtue with an interesting twist: you can only use the words people around you already used. After being assaulted by an entity that only communicates through a cassette player, players must interview townsfolk and snap pictures around town to unravel a conspiracy.

The clever communication limitation, alongside the bold colors of the characters, set Patience is a Virtue apart in the cozy mystery genre.

Rubber Bird (2027)

This physics based platformer asks ‘what if you were a bird made of rubber and you had arms?’. The answer: a lot of chaos and ridiculous situations as Rub the Bird explores small levels like cities and oceans helping his neighbors or, more likely, making a mess.

Rubber Bird is short and sweet, with a playtime of about two to three hours according to the developers, making it a great adventure for a single night of gaming with friends.

Waterful (2027)

Waterful is a cozy building game, where players create oases across dry areas to attract friendly animals. The objective is to simply cultivate lush landscapes, grow plants, and make space for nature to bloom. There are no time limits or resource gathering requirements, so players can simply carve out their own piece of paradise.

Little Cheese Works (Q3 2026)

Most of the Wholesome Direct showed single player, relaxing games. Little Cheese Works sits outside that crowd with its frenetic energy which may just make it a new favorite in the friendslop genre. Play as mice trying to bring cheese back to their demanding company with up to four players, with dangers like cats, stoves, and even conveyor belts standing in your way.

Little Cheese Works includes voice chat, which means players can coordinate their cheesy efforts but can also alert the cat that its prey is nearby.

Walk the Frog (May 2026)

One of the most interesting concepts shown at Wholesome Game Fest, Walk the Frog is a game where players must piece together sticky notes to help a frog navigate his journey home. By dragging and dropping these hand drawn notes across a wall, players can map out puzzles and help Froggo meet new friends and bypass obstacles.

The game has no timers, a staple in cozy games, which means players can slowly navigate their way home and enjoy the narrative at their own pace.

Fossil Quest (Q1 2027)

Live out your archaeological dreams in Fossil Quest, an indie title that allows players to carefully excavate fossils and curate the perfect museum displays for them. Inspired by real techniques used by paleontologists, Fossil Quest is both cozy and educational as players piece together the fossils and craft displays to show museum visitors what these dinosaurs would’ve looked like when they roamed the Earth.
