The Covid rules in England changing this week and what's coming up next

Plan B measures to slow the spread of the Covid-19 Omicron variant come to an end on Wednesday January 26.

Work from home guidance that came into force on December 13 is already over with commuters returning to the usual 9-5 routine.

Face coverings are no longer advised for staff and pupils in secondary schools and college classrooms.

What happens on Thursday January 27?

There is no longer a legal obligation to wear a face covering in shops and other settings like banks and post offices.

Although, the Government has recommended that people continue to wear a mask in crowded and enclosed spaces where you may come into contact with other people you do not normally meet.

Venues and events will no longer be required by law to check visitors’ NHS COVID Pass - although the pass can still be used on a voluntary basis.

In schools, pupils and staff will no longer be advised to wear face masks in communal areas. While in primary schools, staff will no longer be advised to wear face coverings in communal areas.

What happens next?

On March 24, the legal requirement to self-isolate if you have Covid-19 is expected to expire. The Prime Minister hopes to bring the date forward if the data allows.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that Covid testing for arrivals into England will be scrapped. It means that fully vaccinated passengers will no longer have to take a Covid test after arriving into the UK. It comes into effect from 4am on February 11.

The rules change for unvaccinated passengers too. From February 11, passengers who do not qualify as fully vaccinated will no longer be required to do a day eight test after arrival or self-isolate.

They will need to fill out a passenger locator form to demonstrate proof of a negative Covid test taken two days before they travel and they must still take a post-arrival PCR test.
