The Covid-19 restrictions that change in Ireland this week and what it means for Christmas

A number of changes to Ireland's Covid-19 restrictions come into effect from this Friday, December 18.

Until that date, the government are asking people not to mix with any other households outside of those within your support bubble, and you cannot travel outside your county.

But from Friday, people can travel outside their county and you can have visitors from two other households.

Here's a rundown of what's happening this week;

Will restrictions be brought back in January?

The Taoiseach has admitted he is concerned by the recent Covid-19 figures in Ireland, with 429 cases reported on Sunday.

He said it was possible further restrictions will be introduced in January after the Christmas period.

He told RTE's Morning Ireland: "Of course we know how this can grow exponentially, the virus can grow. I am concerned about it.

"We had six weeks of severe restrictions. I think it was only natural and the right thing to do to ease up on those restrictions to some degree.

"The reality is, as I said at he end of those six weeks, personal behaviour is essential now as we move into the Christmas period. We've all got to watch our contacts. Every social contact counts here.

"You could very well be looking at some further restrictions in January."

The Taoiseach said the coronavirus figures will be kept under review.

In outdoor settings away from your home or garden, a maximum of 3 households can meet while maintaining strict physical distancing.

Cinemas, gyms, leisure centres, museums, galleries and swimming pools will remain open.

Restaurants and pubs operating as restaurants (serving a substantial meal) can open for indoor dining with additional restrictions, including a requirement for meals to be prepared on site, inside the premises, with a maximum of 6 people per table.

This includes access for non-residents to restaurants in hotels.

Wet Pubs can only do delivery and take-away services while nightclubs, discos and casinos remain closed.

All retail shops and shopping centres will stay open.

People are still advised to work from home unless absolutely necessary to attend in person.

Schools and creches are open with protective measures.

Further, higher and adult education should remain primarily online.

Public transport capacity is limited to 50%.

Essential workers and essential purposes only.

Those aged over 70 and the medically vulnerable are advised to continue to exercise personal judgement.
