The Count of Monte Cristo: New adaptation of classic novel to be made by Poldark team

The team behind Poldark - producer Mammoth Screen and writer Debbie Horsfield – are set to adapt the literary classic The Count of Monte Cristo

Deadline reports that a new take on the Alexandre Dumas-penned novel, set between 1815 and 1839 in France and Italy, is currently being planned – in hopes it will attract a similar audience to the popular Aidan Turner-starring BBC drama.

Alongside The Three Musketeers, it’s the best-known work of Dumas’, bringing to life the era of the Bourbon Restoration through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France, envisioned through the story of a man wrongfully imprisoned, who escapes jail, acquires a fortune, and plans his revenge against those who wronged him.

“There are several new projects I’m working on, but following our five-year collaboration on Poldark, I’m thrilled to be continuing my relationship with Damien Timmer and Karen Thrussell at Mammoth Screen by developing The Count of Monte Cristo with them,” Horsfield told The Radio Times.

“Dumas’ classic is one of the greatest adventure stories of all time and we’re excited to be bringing his compelling characters and edge of the seat storytelling to the screen.”

Season 4 of Poldark has now concluded, with distraught fans left to wait until next year for a new batch of episodes.
