The coronavirus infection rate is soaring in every part of Bristol

The number of positive COVID-19 tests being recorded in the City of Bristol over a seven day period has risen by more than 50 per cent in the last three days.

The infection rate in the city, expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people, jumped from 95.4 in the week ending Friday, October 8 to 154.5 on the week ending Monday, October 11 as 716 more people were confirmed as having coronavirus.

That includes a large outbreak at Bristol University that has been at least 700 people test positive for the virus so far in October.

All three surrounding districts of Bristol also recorded a large increase in cases.

That includes Bath and North East Somerset, where the rate jumped from 91.1 to 119 as 230 people tested positive for coronavirus.

South Gloucestershire's rate jumped from 63.5 to 87.7 as 250 new cases were recorded, while North Somerset saw 118 new cases as the rate jumped from 45.1 to 54.9.

The current COVID-19 infection rate per 100,000 people in Bristol and its surrounding areas, with the number of new cases in brackets, in the week ending October 8, along with the figures for the seven days to October 8, is as follows.

  • Bristol 154.5 (716), 95.4 (442)
  • Bath and North East Somerset - 119.0 (230), 91.1 (176)
  • South Gloucestershire - 87.7 (250), 63.5 (181)
  • North Somerset - 54.9 (118), 45.1 (97)

The whole of Bristol and its surrounding areas is currently in tier 1 of the government's new three-tier local lockdown system which was introduced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier this week.

Data from October 12-15 has been excluded as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

Nottingham continues to have the highest rate in England, with 3,070 new cases recorded in the seven days to October 11 – the equivalent of 922.2 cases per 100,000 people.

This is a jump in the infection rate from 830 in the seven days to October 8.

Knowsley has the second highest rate, which has climbed from 669.5 to 699.3, with 1,055 new cases, while Liverpool, the only area of the country with tier 3 restrictions, has seen its rate increase from 598.5 to 676.6.
