The coolest pieces to buy from IKEA's new designer collaboration with Gustaf Westman

Think IKEA, but make it designer.

The Scandi flat-pack store is famous for a lot of things – Swedish meatballs, Billy bookcases – but this winter, it’s going high-end, with a designer collab.

That would be with Gustaf Westman, who has partnered with the store to create a 12-piece limited edition collection, featuring tableware and homeware, as part of the store’s annual winter collection, pleasingly called Vinterfint.

These items will include porcelain plates and cups, candleholders, vases and more, all of which have been designed to offer a fun spin on festive items. Think curvy, sculptural designs and bold colours, including red and green items (Christmassy) as well as bubble gum pink and baby blue.

Even better, there’s also a dedicated meatball plate, which has been created in honour of the store’s iconic meatballs turning 40. In another nod to Westman’s Swedish heritage, there’s also a modern take on the candelabra lamp, which features in Swedish windows during the festive period, and a cup and saucer made to hold glogg, or mulled wine, with extra space to include biscuits on the side. Factor in some quirky table LED lights in baby pink and what you have is a very Scandi collection indeed.

“For me, this was an opportunity to take traditional holiday décor aesthetics and turn it on its head, instead, introducing a sense of playfulness and boldness,” Westman said on the collaboration.

“This is my interpretation of the holidays; it’s a new design for a new generation.”

Prices are pleasingly still affordable – there’s plates for £29, and cups for £10 – but they’ve been designed to offer a little extra minimalist sparkle to our homes.

They’re only on sale in stores, so you will need to make the journey to your nearest IKEA to grab one.

If you’re an IKEA Family member, then good news: you’ll have exclusive pre-sale access to the collection in IKEA stores from September 19. There’ll be pre-sale events taking place in a few selected stores, before the collection goes on sale to all customers on September 20. Due to demand, people will only be able to buy four items from the collection at a time, so choose wisely.
