The controversial Only Fools and Horses episode its creator wanted to fix

  • Tessa Peake-Jones, who played Racquel in Only Fools and Horses, stated that modern sitcoms should be as heartwarming as the classic BBC series, attributing its enduring appeal to its "heart".
  • She highlighted that the show's creator, John Sullivan, disliked the 1985 Christmas special "A Royal Flush" so much that he allegedly prevented its broadcast for nearly 20 years.
  • The episode was considered "quite a cruel, dark episode" by editor Chris Wadsworth and producer Richard Latto, as it depicted Del Boy acting uncharacteristically nasty towards his brother Rodney.
  • Sullivan reportedly wanted to edit the episode two decades later to remove Del Boy's cruel behaviour, which director Ray Butt and actor David Jason also felt made Del Boy "too nasty".
  • Peake-Jones also mentioned the cast's intense nerves before filming in front of a live audience, underscoring their dedication to getting the comedy right.
