The controversial Liverpool transfer policy that Bristol City, Leeds United and Aston Villa are hoping to avoid

Bristol City are one of a number of clubs that have been linked with Rhian Brewster.

The Robins are said to be keeping tabs on the Liverpool starlet ahead of the January transfer window as they look to strengthen their attack.

Liverpool have reportedly agreed to let the 19-year-old leave on loan in the New Year, but City face plenty of competition for his signature.

Leeds United and Aston Villa are the latest clubs to have been linked with the striker, whilst Swansea City and Crystal Palace are also said to have held longstanding interest in the player.

Yet whoever manages to win the race for Brewster will have to be aware of a controversial Liverpool transfer policy - and it is one Bristol City have already fallen foul of before.

The Robins took Ryan Kent on loan from Anfield in January 2018, but the winger failed to find his form, making just 10 Championship appearances.

It was a figure deemed to be too few by Liverpool, who effectively fined the Robins £200,000 by triggering a clause in the loan deal that meant City had to pay more if Kent did not play enough.

Liverpool are known to be keen for the young players to actually play games if they are sent on loan, and clauses such as the one the Robins fell foul of have become a regular feature in their deals.

It means that, whoever does sign Brewster in January, needs to make sure they play him or risk having to pay an enlarged fee for a failed loan.

For Bristol City, it also presents extra problems in trying to secure Brewster - Lee Johnson explained last season that the club were in Liverpool's 'bad books' over the failed Kent loan.

he said: ""I think this club has a good reputation with the top clubs - apart from probably with Liverpool at the moment, we're not in their good books - but as a general rule we've always looked after everybody's players and they've gone on to do well."
