The controversial Dan Lydiate v Jason Tovey incident that's divided rugby fans

Former Wales internationals Mark Ring and Jonathan Davies have criticised Cardiff Blues over the Dan Lydiate Welsh derby incident that has polarised opinion.

Lydiate was yellow-carded in the 40th minute for leading with an elbow as he carried into Jason Tovey at Cardiff City Stadium, with many Blues fans and viewers adamant he should have been sent off for making contact with the throat.

But plenty of others had a different take, blaming Tovey for poor high tackle technique that left him lying on the floor holding his face in the aftermath before receiving lengthy treatment.

There were also a number of rugby fans who thought the sin-binning was the correct decision on balance.

Wales legend Shane Williams, commentating for Premier Sports, criticised Tovey's attempted tackle, while Jiffy was unhappy the Blues seemed to question why Lydiate wasn't sent off after ref Ben Whitehouse decided on just a yellow card following an extensive TMO review that was deemed inconclusive.

Ring was the most vocal critic of what happened, launching a scathing Twitter attack on Tovey, who he claimed "can't tackle a rice pudding".

Davies added: "They look to see if they can send him off. Poor."

Summarising the incident, former Wales winger Williams said: "It's a difficult one. Jason Tovey goes too high and I don't think (Ospreys coach) Toby Booth is too pleased.

"Dan Lydiate puts his hand up but catches the hand and the forearm at the same time. Contact is at the top of the shoulder and potentially the face. Those are the rules.

"It's just a really poor tackle attempt. He just needs to go lower. We all know Dan Lydiate, he is not that kind of player."
