The confusing Rangers vs Hibs drop ball incident that Michael Stewart claims sets a precedent

Michael Stewart reckons a worrying precedent has been set by a confusing moment in the final minutes of Rangers win over Hibs.

Referee Bobby Madden awarded a drop ball as Hibs took a corner chasing an equaliser deep into injury time.

It followed a ball being thrown onto the park from supporters at the exact same moment as Stevie Mallan swung in a flag kick.

With two balls in play Madden awarded a drop ball outside the Rangers penalty area - the correct decision under the letter of the law -from which Connor Goldson managed to clear the ball upfield and avert the danger.

Hibs players looked as if they expected possession to be given back to them and didn't contest the dropped ball. But Goldson lashed his clearance deep into the visitors' half for a throw in.

Rangers keeper Allan McGregor banned for Celtic clash after being sent off for outrageous kick at Marc McNulty

And former Hibs midfielder Stewart reckons the decision penalised the Easter Road men.

He told BBC Sportscene: "The ball is thrown in (from the crowd) and Bobby Madden has given a drop ball. Technically when the ball comes in from corner kick the ball is in play. So a drop ball is given.

"But, arguably, that ball is on before Stevie Mallan actually kicks the ball (the corner).

"Nobody touches the ball before it is actively on the park either. Hibs were about to collect the ball 30 or 40 yards from goal but then end up in their own half.

"There was a lot of confusion. Bobby Madden just dropped the ball there. But I would like to see if the ball that was thrown in from the crowd - was that in play before the corner was taken?

"Now we have a precedent here where, if you're team is under pressure somebody just throws a ball onto the park to alleviate the pressure.

"It wasn't a well handled situation."
