The company painting murals all over Swansea

If you live in Swansea, it is very likely you've seen at least some of their work.

Brightly coloured murals are cropping up across the city's most popular locations, all paying ode to the its rich history or lending themselves to their picturesque surroundings.

The work of Fresh Creative Co, the brainchild of James Burgess, is now on display across the city, brightening up the different areas they are located.

From special reminders of the city's most famous poet and symbols of the city lining SA1, to tributes to cricketing legends and special tributes to key workers, the murals hold special significance.

Mr Burgess, originally of Exeter, moved to Wales to study at Swansea University and has stayed here ever since. He had always been interested in art, and originally would do the work as a hobbie, with one of his first big projects being the Swansea SA1 Mural Project, painted along the retaining wall running along St Leger Crescent, depicting some of the city's most iconic sights.

But he decided to focus all of his attentions in his passion and set up his own company, which has gone from strength to strength, with the demand so much so that he has now expanded his team, welcoming Ffion Roberts, Karim Kamil, Robin Gunney and Dave Long to the team.

Some of the most familiar sights are the Dylan Thomas Trail which runs through Uplands, the painted electricity boxes in Langland, the image of Joe Cascarini, founder of Joe's Ice Cream on St Helen's Road, and depictions of cricketing greats at St Helen's rugby and cricket ground.

But more recently, we've seen the artists' work pay tribute to the work of the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic, as many businesses have chosen to have their shutters painted to say their own visible thank you.

Mr Burgess said: "I have always been interested in art, and I would take on small projects when working doing other jobs, it was more of a hobbie.

"As more commercial jobs started coming in it meant I could leave my job and focus on my art business which has always been my passion.

"The SA1 murals was the first big job I had and it all went from there. There was also the coffee cup by the train station and the Dylan Thomas art trail which was a big project.

"Art is a very important part of culture and improving people's quality of lives.

"Grey walls are not very inspirational, having art work brightens up peoples' day or challenges the way they think about things, and just engages the local community and brightens up the area.

"It also celebrates Swansea's heritage because there is so much culture within Swansea that needs to be celebrated.

"It definitely gives you a sense of pride in seeing how far things have come. With the NHS works a lot of people want to spread the good message and anything we can do to celebrate the key workers and NHS at the moment we are happy to do."
