The communities in Wales with the highest levels of coronavirus

New data released by the Welsh Government and Public Health Wales has revealed the number of cases of Covid-19 in every community in Wales.

Public Health Wales publishes the number of coronavirus cases in every part of Wales. This data was published on Friday, February 5. It provides the figures for areas with an average of 7,000 people, called Middle Super Output Areas. In practice this means there are statistics for areas like Canton in Cardiff, Morriston in Swansea and Porth in Rhondda.

The data shows there are eight places in Wales with more than 400 cases per 100,000 of population.

The areas with the most cases are:

  • Chirk & Ceiriog Valley, Wrexham - 478.2

  • Dafen & Felin-foel, Carmarthenshire - 465.3

  • Buckley North, Northop & Sychdyn, Flintshire - 451.3

  • Caia Park, Wrexham - 448.1

  • Hermitage & Whitegate, Wrexham - 445.5

  • Town North, University & Rhos-ddu, Wrexham - 439.1

  • Llanelli Bigyn Carmarthenshire - 430.5

  • Acton & Maes-y-dre, Wrexham - 415.3

  • Wrexham West, Wrexham - 408

Map shows the number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 people for each area in the last seven days. If you can't use this map, there is also a chart you can use to search for your community at the bottom of this article.

It is really important to bear in mind that this data is very volatile because it covers such small areas. Where an area has a very small population, even one positive case can push up the cases per 100,000 significantly. You should therefore be cautious about drawing too many conclusions directly from the information.

For example, in Cardiff, Butetown and Trowbridge have almost exactly the same rate of infection at 231.3 and 241.5 per 100,000 of population respectively. However in terms of cases Butetown is 25 whereas Trowbrdige has just 15. This because Butetown has a higher population.
