The Cod's Scallops brings back beef dripping chips after online reaction

Top chippy the Cod's Scallops has good news for its more traditional fans this year - "beef is back".

It follows the controversial switch from beef dripping to vegetable oil in November.

From next Monday (January 11) the reigning number one chip shop in the UK will reintroduce the old-fashioned cooking method which traditionalists say makes chips crispier and tastier.

However, they shouldn't get too excited as it will be for just one day a week.

The U-turn comes after die-hard dripping fans said the chippy had lost its unique selling point and they vowed to take their business elsewhere.

However, many customers said they hadn't noticed the difference when the chippy switched to veggie and vegan-friendly oil.

John Molnar, who owns the chippies in Carrington, Wollaton, Long Eaton and Market Harborough, said: "It was always at the back of my mind. I didn't expect the reaction we got though.

"It's quite a compliment how many people were passionate about it."

Customers will be able to have chips fried in either oil or dripping on Mondays - the quietest day of the week - which will allow staff time to serve orders either way.

"Trade has been static - we have not had a decline," said Mr Molnar, adding that the latest announcement may still prompt objections.

"Some people will still say they want it on a Friday but we're hoping if people want that flavour they will come on a Monday."
