The Co-op beats Aldi at Grocer of the Year Gold Awards 2019

A new retailer has beaten Aldi to be crowned Grocer of the Year at the Grocer Gold Awards 2019.

The Co-op has knocked last year's winner Aldi off the top spot to take home the most coveted award for the first time in the ceremony's history.

The big win was largely down to the Co-op's like-for-like sales growth of 4.4%.

The Grocer also reported that the supermarket grew its convenience estate by 5.1%, made an additional £3.6 billion in sales of food and saw its underlying profit for food reach £80million.

Finalists for the Grocer of the Year award were Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Ocado and Tesco.

While, other winners of the night include Service Award Winner - Tesco, Britain's Favourite Supermarket - Tesco and Price Award Winner - Asda.
