The clock tower, Davenport Theatre and outdoor markets - the things Stockport misses the most

Barely a week goes by without news that something new is popping up in Stockport.

The town centre is blossoming with bars, restaurants and shops and the surrounding suburbs are brilliant in their own right.

But there are some things people in the borough wish they could bring back from the past.

The Manchester Evening News asked our readers: if they could bring one thing back to Stockport, what would it be?

Dozens of people commented on our Facebook post and some of the answers will take you right back.

The clock tower at Merseyway Shopping Centre (Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council)

Lots of locals said they'd bring back the clock tower at the Merseyway precinct.

"I'd bring back the clock for sure", Angela Coppock said.

Barbara Whitelegg agreed, and wrote: "I miss the clock. I still look up for it."

"I'm glad I'm not the only one who looks for the clock!", Margaret Holbrook added.

Lots of people in Stockport said they missed the Davenport Theatre (Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council)

Michelle Davison said she missed the Davenport Theatre, and Lee Stokes agreed.

Affectionately known locally as 'The Davvy', the theatre was situated on the A6 between Hazel Grove and the town centre.

It opened its doors to the public in June 1937 but was closed in 1999 and swiftly demolished.

Michelle also said she'd bring back the sight-seeing trams in Stockport.

"Definitely a sight seeing tram!" Patricia Shaw agreed.

Another favourite from the past among readers was Sarah's Self Service Restaurant.

Pam Ham commented: "Sarah’s restaurant, loved going there after shopping in the wonderful shops. All gone don’t go there anymore."

Helen Louise Brown added: "Cheesecake & hot chocolate at Sarah's. Happy times!"

Samantha Fletcher said she'd bring back The Baker's Vaults pub in the Market Place to 'how it used to be'.

"The live music was brilliant", she said.

"Had some of my best nights in there."

The Market Place pub reopened under new management and with a trendy new look in 2014 after standing empty for seven months.

Wendy Hartley said she wished the River Mersey, over which the Merseyway was built, was still visible like the river running through Chester town centre.

"Good choice", Lynne Jackson agreed. "I think its really said that the river isn't seen."

Many readers said they'd bring back big outdoor markets in Stockport.

Anita Foxall commented: "The massive outdoor market."

Christine Turner added: "Better shops, Stockport has become Poundville!!!

"And bring back the old style market, it's absolutely dead now."
