The 'clinical passport' Premier League stars will need to prove they are fit to play

Premier League players will have to present a 'clinical passport' to prove they don't have coronavirus before playing.

All players and staff at Manchester City, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Sheffield United will use the new system tonight as top-flight football in England returns for the first time in nearly three months.

The players will each have a unique code on their phone, which will be scanned like a barcode to prove they tested negative for Covid-19.

The £4m system was created by Hong Kong-based company Prenetics.

So for, 8,687 coronavirus tests have been carried out at all Premier League clubs, with 16 positive results.

In the latest round of testing, two individuals at Norwich City tested positive.

In a statement, the Premier League side said: "In line with the Premier League’s protocols, the player will now self-isolate for a period of seven days before being tested again at a later date.

"The player must return a negative test result before being able to resume training.

"The club will not name the player in question and asks that his request for privacy and confidentiality are respected at this time."

The 'clinical passport' could also be a way to allow fans return to matches, Sky Sports reports.

Avi Lasarow, Prenetics' chief executive for the EMEA region, said: "I think it's going to be a big game-changer in terms of linking Covid-19 testing results... to a digital access mechanism based on biometrics and other such factors.

"With any innovation, you're always thinking about what the end goal is... in the world of sport it's about getting fans back into the stadium."

"You could see a position whereby fans scan their health passport information very securely to determine whether their test is valid and they have a negative Covid-19 result."

Fans will not be allowed into grounds for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.
