The clever slate bungalow surrounded by wide glass-fronted verandah named best new build in Wales

This modern single-storey house with big windows and surrounded by a wide glass-fronted verandah has been named the best new build property in Wales.

The holiday home impressed judges at the annual Federation of Master Builders’ Cymru awards held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cardiff on Friday.

Judges said they were “blown away” by the project, which involved demolishing an existing house on the site and building a new “bespoke” property.

The house, with a grey exterior and tiled roof, is located in the coastal village of Pontllyfni in Gwynedd .

Caernarfon -based company Harriet Lee Building & Renovation were commissioned to complete the work.

They said the project required full demolition of the existing property on the site, which had to be completely cleared.

The owner said she felt a strong emotional connection to the scheme, as her family had been visiting the area since she was a child.

As she lived more than 200 miles away in Berkshire, she was kept up-to-date on progress with emails and photographs on WhatsApp.

She also visited the site once a month throughout the work.

The four-bedroom single level property was the company’s first new build home and was praised by the federation’s judges.

They said: “The use of slate as the external cladding was an inspired touch – a material closely associated to the area where the house is located.”

Federation director Ifan Glyn said: “For the construction industry, [the awards] are an opportunity to celebrate all that is good about small local building firms and their contribution to the UK economy.”

“Time and time again, we have been impressed with just how far these builders will go to ensure their client is happy. It is this dedication that we want to celebrate.”

Harriet Lee Building & Renovation will now go through to compete in the national finals in September for the chance to win the UK category title.
