The clear and present dangers facing Newcastle United on the Salomon Rondon deal

Salomon Rondon's future at Newcastle United hinges on Rafa Benitez staying in charge at St James' Park.

As it stands, there are no talks in place with Rondon's representatives and United following the end of his loan deal with the Magpies.

But Rondon made it clear to everybody at Newcastle he wanted to stay before the end of his temporary stint with United.

Benitez will make it clear that he sees Rondon as part of his plans during talks with the hierarchy over the next couple of days.

However, Newcastle opted against getting a pre-arranged deal for Rondon agreed during his nine-month stay at the club.

The No 9 ended the season with 12 goals and is available for a fee of £16.5million - a price that many would consider a bargain given his performances this term.

West Brom's failure to win promotion means that Rondon is available for the same price as last summer.

However, the fee does have an expiry date on that clause and he may not be available for such a knockdown rate for the entire window.

The release clause expired in early August last summer but the more immediate danger is that other clubs may fancy the idea of adding Rondon's goals and experience to their ranks now that the transfer window is open.

Already, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with the South American star.

Many have suggested that a swap deal for either Jacob Murphy or Dwight Gayle would fit the bill for the Rondon deal.

But West Brom aren't interested in the price for Murphy and Gayle is taking some time consider his options after scoring 24 times for the Baggies this season.

Neither Gayle or Murphy had option to buy clauses in their West Brom loan deals last summer.
