Planes are not nearly as clean as they look, with tray tables found to be the dirtiest surface on the aircraft, in a recent study conducted by microbiologists.

If you're plotting your next holiday, and curious as to which airlines deliver in the hygiene stakes, then you're in luck because airline ranking site Skytrax has just announced the winners of its 2018 survey to find the cleanest aircraft cabins in the world.

As part of its annual World Airline Awards, it asked passengers to rate the standards and quality of cleanliness based on their experiences flying with airlines around the world, taking into account seat areas, tables, carpets, cabin panels and toilets.

Asian carriers featured heavily on the list, with no British airlines making the top 30. Meanwhile ANA All Nippon Airways – the largest airline in Japan – claimed the top spot.

Here are the 15 cleanest airlines in the world, according to the Skytrax survey:

1. ANA All Nippon Airways

2. EVA Air

3. Asiana Airlines

4. Singapore Airlines

5. Japan Airlines

6. Cathay Pacific Airways

7. Qatar Airways

8. Swiss International Air Lines

9. Hainan Airlines

10. Lufthansa

11. Korean Air

12. Cathay Dragon

13. Austrian Airlines
