How Liverpool celebrated when LFC won the Champions League - in pictures

Ahead of the Champions League final, Liverpool authorities were preparing for the city's busiest week ever, with fans pouring into the city as well as visitors making long-planned trips to see the 2019 River Festival.

Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council,  Culture Liverpool, Merseytravel , British Transport Police and  Liverpool John Lennon Airport were all working together to ensure the weekend went smoothly.

But it was hard to damp the exuberance of the Reds, who could be spotted on every corner by mid afternoon on the day of the make-or-break match between Liverpool FC and Tottenham in Madrid.

Concert Square was a sea of red, with fans letting off flares and amassing in such large numbers that surrounding roads were closed off.

Meanwhile, on Ranelagh Street, boisterous fans climbed scaffolding - before police ushered them down again.

And while Madrid played host to an estimated 50,000 LFC fans - with or without tickets - there was no doubt that Liverpool was also the place to be on Champions League Night.

This is how the day unfolded.
