The city centre pub with a ‘massive beer garden’ loved by shoppers and sun seekers

A city-centre pub has been praised by locals as a summer must-visit by shoppers and sun chasers alike thanks to its ‘massive beer garden’.

The Old Wellington boasts a prime position on Cathedral Gates, just a three-minute walk from some of the city's central attractions such as Manchester Cathedral, Manchester Arena, Royal Exchange Theatre and the National Football Museum.

Nicknamed The Old Welly and just a stone’s throw from Selfridges, as well the Arndale shopping centre, it’s the perfect place to stop for lunch or drinks after some retail therapy.

The Nicholson’s pub, which has a rich history dating back to 1552, serves traditional grub such as sandwiches, burgers, fish and chips plus its specialty pies such as the game or the pulled lamb Lancashire hot pot pie.

The Old Wellington is Manchester's oldest pub dating back to 1552 (Dianne Bourne)

But if a drink in its pub garden is what you’re after, it sells a selection of craft ales, wines, gins and cocktails, including the classic summer drink, Pimms and lemonade.

Here's what on the cocktail menu, perfect for summer:

  • Aperol spritz - The classic aperitif and the perfect summer tipple. Aperol topped with Prosecco and soda water served with a wedge of orange.
  • Bramble spritz - Bombay Bramble gin, topped with Prosecco and lemonade served over ice with lemon.
  • Pimms & lemonade - Garnished with orange, mint, cucumber and strawberries.
  • Belaazar Rose & tonic - A refreshing combination of Belsazar Rose vermouth and Fever Tree refreshingly light tonic with a grapefruit wedge.

Although described as a must-visit this summer by previous customers, 2Chill user Susan Griffin also warned it can be ‘heaving’ with pub goers, especially when the weather is nice.

Rating is as four stars, a sure sign she’d recommend it to friends, Susan wrote: “Opposite Selfridges and the Arndale shopping centre is The Old Wellington, which stands out with its black and white façade.

“The location makes it hugely popular, as does the massive beer garden, which is usually heaving when the sun’s out.”

The Old Wellington is open Monday - Saturday from 11am-11pm and 11am-8pm on Sundays.

Have you stopped for a drink here? Is there a must-order dish on the menu? Do you have any tips for nabbing a table in its busy beer garden?
