The cine files! Your weekly blockbuster breakdown

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (17 Feb)

First of a massive new batch of Marvel productions. Big-screen debut for Kang the Conqueror. Expect to see plenty more of this awesome mofo of a supervillain in future films.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (Marvel Studios)

The Son (17 Feb)

Florian Zeller’s follow-up to The Father. Hugh Jackman and newcomer Zen McGrath are excellent as dad and very troubled son. The film itself? Pop it in the solid/unremarkable section of your Venn diagram.

Sharper (17 Feb)

Julianne Moore is on top form in this hyper-layered con artist caper. John Lithgow too. It’s an A24 joint as well, and they know how to please. If you’re easily misdirected you’ll love it. Clever clogs might spot the big twists.

The Inspection (17 Feb)

Joining the US Marines might not be the bucket-list career option if you’re young, gay and Black. But it’s pretty much what director Elegance Bratton did. This is his version of what happened.

Make Me Famous (17 Feb)

Artist Edward Brezinski was a bit crap compared with his late-1970s New York contemporaries. But that didn’t stop his desperate tilts at fame – even to the point of possibly faking his own death - as this quirky doc suggests.

Nostalgia (17 Feb)

It’s Naples. It’s gangsters. Yawn? Well no, actually, because this one is gorgeously filmed, brilliantly acted and goes far deeper than the usual crime drama

Marcel the Shell with Shoes on (Marcel the Shell with Shoes on)

THE STOP-MOTION MUST SEE

I’m sorry, am I looking at a picture of a shell with a single googly eye and… shoes?

Yes, yes you are.

And I, as a fully grown adult with free will, am supposed to be interested, am I?

Yes, in fact we think you’ll love all 89 minutes of Marcel the Shell with Shoes on.

Okay…

You see, you know Jenny Slate? Fired from SNL, chanted ‘don’t be suspicious’ on Parks and Rec, star of Big Mouth, etc.

Yes…

Well, 12 years ago she teamed up with film director Dean Fleischer Camp to create a hilarious and dangerously cute three-part series based around a sassy little guy called Marcel, which has since racked up more than 40 million views.

Oh yeah, I think I saw that around the same time I was obsessed with ‘Chocolate Rain’…

How embarrassing for you.

Don’t act like you weren’t, too!

Moving on… the pair have teamed up with indie cool kids A24 as well as Nathan Fielder, Isabella Rossellini and Thomas Mann on a full-blown feature film that’s guaranteed to help you forget about your woes/sins/Sunday scaries for a small proportion of the day.

I must say, I’m intrigued by the cast…

Did I mention that the shell walks around with a ball of pet lint?

Oh go on then.

‘Marcel the Shell with Shoes on’ is in cinemas from 17 Feb

Magic Mike’s Last Dance (Claudette Barius)

THE MAGIC MIKE TOUR OF LONDON

It’s the final fling for the Magic Mike franchise, so for the obsessed (or maybe ever-so-slightly interested) we have prepared an accompanying real-life tour of the film’s London locations.

Got a proposal to make? Then start at Fortum & Mason’s bar at the Royal Exchange, the spot where Salma Hayek really sells the idea of the new show to Channing Tatum.

Need to burn off those Fortnums calories? Get backflipping in front of the Peace Pagoda in Battersea Park, just like the Magic Mike boys.

Ready for the big event? Then head to the Clapham Grand, aka The Rattigan theatre in the movie, the place where all the dance magic happens.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance is in cinemas now
