The Christmas spirit has arrived early in Dumfries

A Christmas tree and a nativity scene have been erected in Dumfries town centre to spread some festive cheer.

The People’s Project joined forces with the council and Dumfries Partnership Action Group members Kenny Bowie and Mark Smith, of Kings Coffee Shop, to bring the “little extra light into the High Street”.

The tree has been erected opposite the Imperial pub at the bottom of Munches Street and the Christmas nativity is opposite the coffee shop.

Mark said: “We wanted to do something positive for the town in this most difficult of Christmases.

“No-one knows what the long term impact on the High Street will be although I can say this, If we don’t support our local High Street, the only option we’ll have left is Amazon, so it would be in all our interests to shop local.

“ The project may not solve the bigger economic problems facing the High Street, but it serves notice to the public that there are a lot of people who care and want to support their local community, and that is a very important message to get across this Christmas.”

He added: “We are grateful to Jamie James, the community assets manager for Nithsdale, and Ian Johnstone, who has 40 years experience in the council. for helping us make this happen.”
