Following the release of Silver Bullets, The Chills’ first album in nearly 20 years, New Zealand’s indie music luminaries are back in Australia. The past few years have been traumatic for frontman Martin Phillips, who has battled with depression, but he’s emerged with his strongest collection of songs yet.

The torchbearers of New Zealand label Flying None, the band pioneered the 1980s Dunedin sound, a lo-fi fusion of 60s psychedelia, punk and jangle-pop. Over the years, they have gone through band splits, but their distinctive sound of “spindly guitar lines atop organ-drenched backing, slashed in reverb, with Phillips spilling out words on top” remains.
