The chilling 999 call where Madog Rowlands confesses to killing fiancee Lauren Griffiths

This is the chilling phone call made by murderer Madog Rowlands to a 999 operator in which he admitted killing his fiancee Lauren Griffiths.

Rowlands, 23, was found guilty of murdering Ms Griffiths, 21, at their flat in Cardiff on April 29, 2019, following a trial at Newport Crown Court.

During the trial, the jury was played a recording of the Rowlands' 999 call in which he confessed to killing Ms Griffiths.

In the call, he said: "I’ve killed my fiancée by mistake. She’s dead because I’ve killed her. I have strangled her.”

He told the operator he had taken LSD and MDMA.

The defendant added: “I killed Lauren by accident. We got into a fight.”

The court was also shown CCTV footage of both Rowlands and Ms Griffiths shopping in Lidil, in Maindy Road, and walking back to their flat in Glynrhondda Street, Cathays, on April 28, 2019, the day before Ms Griffiths' death.

These images were last time she was seen before her death.

CCTV footage was also shown of Rowlands leaving the flat on the morning of April 29, 2019, after he had killed Ms Griffiths who was left lying on a mattress in the couple's bedroom.

The defendant visited T&A Stores in nearby Salisbury Road where he purchased a bottle of whiskey, bin bags and cigarettes.

He also drew out £250 from his bank account, which he later used to buy drugs, before returning to the flat.

In the last piece of footage, Rowlands is shown inside the flat being arrested by PC Michael Lord, who recorded the defendant on a body worn camera.

During the trial, PC Lord said: "At 6.21pm I arrested him on suspicion of murder and he made no reply to caution.

“He had significant reddening around his neck and he was sweating a lot.

“I asked him if he had been arrested before. He nodded and said: ‘Yes, for attacking Lauren’. I asked what had happened and he said: ‘Strangling again, it was a while ago’."

The defendant admitted strangling Ms Griffiths to death but claimed he did it self defence after claiming she began strangling him during an "dissociative episode", after waking up at their flat.

But this was dismissed by the jury who delivered a unanimous guilty verdict.

Rowlands, of Coed Efa in New Broughton, Wrexham, is due to be sentenced on Friday, January 8.
