The Chelsea wonderkid to save Frank Lampard millions in the summer transfer window

Chelsea were surprisingly quiet in the January transfer window, but have already made a huge statement ahead of the summer.

Hakim Ziyech's £33.4m move from Ajax will officially go through on July 1, 2020 and the Morocco international is set to provide much needed improvements in attacking areas for next season.

And if head coach Frank Lampard is backed in the summer, there could be a mini squad overhaul at Stamford Bridge as the Blues have been linked with the likes of Timo Werner, Jadon Sancho, Ben Chilwell and Moussa Sissoko among plenty others.

The arrival of a new goalkeeper could be on the cards as it remains to be seen where Kepa Arrizabalaga fits into Lampard's long-term plans having been dropped in favour of Willy Caballero for the last two games.

There has also been talk of bolstering the spine of the team even further.

Lampard is yet to settle on a first-choice centre-back pairing, although it would appear he's looking to find a partner for Antonio Rudiger and N'Golo Kante's latest injury setback could mean a decision must be made at the end of the season.

Watford's Abdoulaye Doucoure as well as Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly are just two names linked with a summer move to west London and  deals for the pair would take a huge chunk out of Lampard's transfer budget.

It just so helps that the Blues already have a player who can play in defence and midfield already at their disposal.

Ethan Ampadu will return to Cobham when his loan spell at RB Leipzig expires at the end of the season and he could save Chelsea millions in the summer.

The Wales international has had a difficult season in Germany, but made the most of a rare starting opportunity in the 1-0 Champions League round of 16 first-leg win over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Playing in the middle of a back three, Ampadu's stats were impressive and he also earned a place in the Champions League Team of the Week with a 7.3 rating from Whoscored.

Judging by the overwhelming response on social media, Blues supporters were very impressed with Ampadu's performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and it will have made Lampard sit up and take notice.

After all, Lampard is a fan of Ampadu having attempted to loan him at Derby County last season.

"I tried to sign Ethan on loan at Derby last year, so I'm a big fan, but with the minutes he played last year, I have to think of the bigger picture and the interests of Ethan and of Chelsea," he said ahead of the teenager's loan exit last summer.

"The idea that he could play a lot of games somewhere is good for him and we haven't brought him here while that is up in the air."

Whilst the 18-year-old hasn't played all that often this season, his did show against Spurs that he can be of use at Chelsea in 2020/21. He can be the passer in central defence alongside Rudiger, he could play in the middle of a back three and could slot into a defensive midfield position should Kante leave or Juventus firm up their interest in Jorginho.

It promises to be a big summer for Chelsea and they could spend big on numerous positions, but in Ampadu they certainly have a player who could save them millions.
