The Chelsea suspension risk against Newcastle United to hand Frank Lampard selection headache

Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is walking a suspension tightrope after picking up his fourth yellow card of the season against Southampton on Sunday.

The Italian international was booked early on at St Mary's for a foul on Shane Long, with the 27-year-old picking up his fourth caution in the Premier League.

As such, the Chelsea midfielder is now just one booking away from a one-match suspension, ahead of the return of Premier League football after the international break, when the Blues face Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 19.

Any player who earns five bookings from his side's first 19 Premier League matches of the season will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition.

If Jorginho is booked again against Newcastle, he would then be banned for Chelsea's next Premier League fixture at Burnley.

So far, only Crystal Palace's Luka Milivojevic has served a one-game suspension this season for accumulating five yellow cards, but Jorginho is not the only player on four.

Jorginho currently has two more bookings than any of his Chelsea team-mates, with Tammy Abraham, Marcos Alonso and Andreas Christensen all having received two yellow cards each so far this season.

Four other Chelsea players - N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma - have received one yellow card each.

The cut off point for a one-game suspension for five yellow cards is December 31, although players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their team's 32nd fixture of the season will serve a two-match suspension in the competition.
