The Chelsea outcast who's won his place back in Frank Lampard's squad ahead of transfer window

When Ben Chilwell arrived at Chelsea in the summer it was obvious that he was always going to be the first choice left-back.

The England international has made an excellent start in west London after his £50million move from Leicester City.

However, the debate would be over who could be his back-up, with Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri being the main options.

Lampard also went to club captain Cesar Azpilicueta last season to play in the role, with the Blues boss not wholly satisfied with his choices.

At the beginning of the 2020/21 campaign, Chilwell was recovering from an injury, so the space was up for grabs.

Lampard went for Alonso, with the Spaniard starting in the role for the opening three Premier League matches. However, it was that third one where he lost his spot.

The Blues were 3-0 down at West Brom and Alonso had a shocker, so Lampard took him off and replaced him with Azpilicueta.

What happened after angered the Blues boss, with reports that Alonso had decided to try to watch the second half on the team bus, rather than with the rest of the players in the stands.

Chelsea managed to come back to draw the match 3-3, but that has been the last match that Alonso has played, and it could be his last one he ever plays for the Blues.

Meanwhile, Emerson featured in the two Carabao Cup matches before making substitute appearances in the first Champions League games against Krasnodar and Rennes.

But it has been the final two Champions League matches which have solidified Emerson as the primary back-up option for Chilwell.

The 26-year-old started both matches against Sevilla and Krasnodar and impressed in both games, looking good up and down the left flank.

Emerson was one of the players who was expected to be moved on in January to raise funds and make space for any other new players.

However, the Italy international is expected to be kept by Lampard to provide depth in a crucial position for Lampard.

He has a long way to go before he might knock Chilwell out of the position, and his future will no doubt be revisited in the summer, but he has worked his way back into the squad this week.
