The Chelsea midfielder who Paul Scholes is backing to become the Blues' next Frank Lampard

Former England and Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is backing Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount to follow in Frank Lampard's footsteps and become a match-winner for the Blues in years to come.

Scholes made the admission following Chelsea's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Tuesday evening, as Nuno Espirito Santo's side came from 1-0 down to secure all three points courtesy of a late strike from Pedro Neto.

Though Chelsea took the lead through Olivier Giroud's impressive finish shortly after half time, the Blues, over the course of the 90 minutes, struggled to carve out opportunities, despite having creative influxes such as Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner and Mount on the pitch.

Despite Chelsea's struggles to create chances, just as they did at Goodison Park against Everton on Saturday evening, Scholes believes Mount has the potential to replicate the success Lampard had during his playing days at Stamford Bridge.

"I think the problem that they have got is creativity," Scholes told Amazon Prime. "Looking at the last two games, they have hardly created a chance.

"I think they have got the players, but they are young players and it is going to take them a bit of time.

"Mason Mount, every time I see him I am really impressed with him. I think he could become like a Frank Lampard. I think he has got the ability and the technique to really win games for Chelsea.

"Mason has got his manager, there, to fall back on and has nobody better to learn from. He should be winning games for Chelsea.

"In years to come, I think he will score a lot of goals for Chelsea, just like Frank."

Had Chelsea maintained their 1-0 advantage at Molineux, they would have gone joint-top of the Premier League table with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool ahead of those two squaring up to each other at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

And with the title race proving to be a close fought battle so far this season, Chelsea are still in the thick of it, despite losing their last two Premier League matches.

Scholes continued: "It is going to be the tightest title race we have had for such a long time.

"I still think Liverpool are the best team and they will win the league, even though the gap will be nowhere near as big as it was last season.

"I expect Manchester City to get close and then there is the rest of them. I still expect Manchester United to improve massively, Chelsea are a good team, as we have seen, and they will be there or there abouts.

"But it is going to be tight, it is going to be tough. However, I just don't expect Chelsea to be there this year."
