The Chelsea man who can save Marina Granovskaia millions as Antonio Rudiger makes transfer call

Chelsea could be about to lose a key defender in Antonio Rudiger, with the German's contract due to expire in less than 12 months' time.

The Germany international is yet to agree on an extension on his existing deal, and according to German outlet Sport 1, via the Express, he is set to consider his options before committing to a new contract with the Blues.

Rudiger has become an integral part of Thomas Tuchel 's back line since the Chelsea boss took over from Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge in January.

If Rudiger does leave, then the Blues could look to the transfer market for a replacement, with Jules Kounde of Sevilla someone who has previously been heavily linked with the west London club.

However, there is an opportunity for Chelsea to turn to someone already in their ranks and save themselves millions in the transfer market.

Trevoh Chalobah, who has played three times for the Blues in all competitions so far this season, has been so impressive when called upon and he could be the man to take Rudiger's place in the team.

The 22-year-old has less than two years remaining on his contract in west London, but is going the right way about earning himself an extension.

Chalobah was strongly linked with a loan move away from Chelsea over the summer transfer window, but Tuchel decided to keep him around the squad.

The Blues boss said this on his defender: "I think he did a fantastic pre-season with us and he’s a very good player and even more importantly a top character.

"He has both feet on the ground and he took his chance very impressively.

"He played very, very good matches in pre-season, he performed 120 minutes against Villarreal and another strong 90 minutes against Crystal Palace.

"So I think it’s very logical that he stays with us and is looking for his chance here. We let some players go and Trevoh is the guy we absolutely want to keep and this is the status for him.

"I absolutely don’t know anything about the contract situation I just know that we had a talk yesterday [Thursday] and I think that his situation is he went out for loans, he had the minutes he needed to develop and now is a good moment to stay with us and to be part of the group."

Of course, with Thiago Silva now being 36, turning 37 later this month, there is a possibility that Chelsea may need two new central defenders.

Malang Sarr, who was brought in from Nice last summer, is yet to play a competitive match for the Blues, but is an option to come in and fight for a place at centre-back under Tuchel.

Chalobah remains a strong option for Tuchel to have at his disposal, and despite the defender being rather low in the pecking order at the moment, he could see himself get much more of an opportunity in the team next season - especially if Rudiger does leave the club.

Chelsea supporters will be hoping the club can reach an agreement with the Germany defender, but if that is not a possibility, then Chalobah could save the Blues millions of pounds in the transfer market.
