The Chelsea legend who would be worth £209m if the Blues signed him now

There is always plenty of discussion when it comes to transfer values.

The cost of buying a player in the transfer window has sky-rocketed in the last two decades.

In 2000 the most expensive player was Figo, when he moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid for a fee in the region of £37million.

Nineteen years later and the record transfer stands at £198m after Neymar left Baercelona to join Paris Saint-Germain.

It is astonishing how quickly transfer figures have increased over the years and it makes you wonder what some of the best players of years gone by would be worth nowadays.

Well, we have to wonder no more, as TotallyMoney.com have done some sterling research into transfer figures from years gone by compared with the rate of inflation to produce the Transfer Index.

The website has looked into the 100 most expensive transfers in each season in Europe’s big five leagues since the dawn of the Premier League in 1992.

And it has produced some startling results.

Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool: Frank Lampard press conference

While Neymar may be the most expensive player on the planet right now, he would be usurped of that title by someone else if he was playing today - a former Chelsea star - Gianluca Vialli.

Vialli, who played and managed the Blues, was a big money signing for Juventus back in 1992 when he left Sampdoria.

The Old Lady shelled out a whopping £14.85million for the Italian striker, which back then was a world record.

And that puts him as the only person to be worth more than Brazilian Neymar, in today's money, if he were to be sold right now, as according to TotallyMoney , Vialli's transfer fee would be £209m now!

To be fair, he did win Serie A twice, the Coppa Italia four times, the Cup Winners' Cup twice, the UEFA Cup and Champions League, as well as the FA Cup and the League Cup in England, so he probably deserves the accolade.
