The Chelsea ace facing 'make-or-break season' following Frank Lampard's £72m Kai Havertz move

Much has been made over the past few months regarding Kai Havertz's big-money transfer to Chelsea.

While a deal for the Bayer Leverkusen ace isn't done just yet, once it is finalised it will mean Frank Lampard has some very exciting options in the attacking midfield role.

Havertz will go straight into the side given the amount the Blues are expected to splash out on him, thus raising a number of questions about some of the current squad in the process.

Mason Mount has looked right at home in the first team but it remains to be seen where exactly he fits in this season, while Ross Barkley may find game time extremely hard to come by due to the team's attacking options.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek could also find himself in the same boat as the ex-Everton man after a tough and frustrating year in west London.

Chelsea fans are still waiting to see the very best of the academy ace and he really has a battle on his hands now given that Hakim Ziyech and Havertz, once he completes his move, can both play in his position.

Playing a bit-part role under Maurizio Sarri despite really catching the eye in his Crystal Palace loan spell and subsequently making England's World Cup squad, the achilles injury he sustained in the Blues' post-season friendly in the United States back in May 2019 has proved incredibly costly.

The 2019/20 campaign was always going to be a hard one for the player with the majority of his time spent in the treatment room and he only managed to appear in nine games for Lampard's men, with two of those from the start.

Clearly struggling to find his form following the Premier League restart, Loftus-Cheek is now facing a huge year in his bid to finally realise his potential and become a Blues regular.

Former Chelsea man Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes the player has the talent to be a success but he has stated that it is "make or break" for the 24-year-old in 2020/21.

"This season is ‘make or break’ for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, although I see him having a good future," the Dutchman said in an interview with Gentingbet.

"He needs to play more. He needs to be more aggressive when he plays. I always see him as a nice boy but he needs to own more games.

"He has so much talent, a great physical presence but he needs to play with a little bit more anger.

"But most importantly, he needs to stay healthy and keep playing games."

Playing games is going to be the problem for the England international following Lampard's business in the summer transfer market.

It's extremely hard to see where exactly the Lewisham-born player fits into the starting XI and he is more than likely going to have to settle for appearances in the cup and then off the bench here and there in the league.

Making his senior debut for the club all the way back in 2014, six years on Chelsea fans are still waiting to see the real Loftus-Cheek.

He now has the right man at the helm who will give him minutes but it really is a crucial year for the player given he turns 25 in January.

Certainly not helped in the past by injuries and managers who wouldn't give youngsters an opportunity, there is of course the real possibility that he sadly doesn't hit the heights at Stamford Bridge and has to move on elsewhere to do so.

Only one man can ensure that doesn't happen and Loftus-Cheek faces a decisive year in his career.

As Hasselbaink mentioned, it really could be "make or break" for the midfielder this season.
