The Cheese Shop in Nottingham is now selling Minger and Fat Cow

A stinky cheese called Minger is going down a storm at the Cheese Shop in Nottingham.

The first batch of the pungent smelling soft cheese, from Scotland, sold out in four days but the good news for cheese lovers is that it's back in stock this week.

The controversial name, slang for an unattractive or smelly thing, didn't go down well with Waitrose or upmarket cheesemongers Paxton & Whitfield (customers include the Queen and many Michelin-starred restaurants), who wanted the name to change if it was to sell it to well-to-do customers.

But Cheese Shop owners, brothers Webb and Rob Freckingham, have no qualms about the name and think it's a strong selling point.

"The name sells itself. Look at how Stinking Bishop is. Admittedly it's not everybody's cheese but if you like cheese, and like food, you'll like this.

"It's tangy, rich, soft and creamy. The smell will get stronger and more meaty as it ages - that's the nature of wash rind cheese," said Webb.

Minger comes from family-run Highland Fine Cheeses, in Tain, which also supplies the shop, in Flying Horse Walk, with another of its award-winning creations - Fat Cow, a semi-hard holey cheese with a delicate sweet flavour.

"The gentleman who makes it has got a sense of humour like us so we find it funny.

"It's probably best not to give either of these to your mother-in-law on Mother's Day though," added Webb.
