The cheeky response James Davies gave to Warren Gatland after being handed Rugby World Cup start

Warren Gatland has revealed the entertaining response he received from James Davies when he informed the larger-than-life flanker he was starting against Fiji.

Davies, affectionately known as ‘Cubby Boi’, is brought in as one of two changes to the starting side for Wednesday’s clash.

He replaces Justin Tipuric on the openside, and when Gatland approached him to say congratulations, the banter started flying.

“I said to James ‘Well done’,” said Wales boss Gatland, “ and he replied ‘You’ve finally seen the light have you!?’

“But then he said ‘I’m only joking’.

“I loved that. I thought it was brilliant. It’s a great response.

“I love a bit of banter like that and I have no problem with comments like that.

“It just says to me that players believe in their own ability.

When he was quizzed about the exchange, Davies insisted the comment was tongue in cheek.

“I’d like to say that Tips and all the other back rowers have been outstanding in my eyes,” said Davies.

“I was a little bit shocked to get the call.

“But like he said, I believe in myself and now I have the chance to go and show it.”

The only other change to the starting side that beat Australia last Sunday sees Ross Moriarty start at No.8, with Aaron Wainwright dropping to the bench.

Gatland added: “We’re trying to think about the bigger picture in terms of later on in the tournament.

“A couple of players get an opportunity. Ross is hungry and James at 7.

“We’ve been really happy with Justin Tipuric’s form but it’s an opportunity to look at someone else, just in case, for any reason, he (Tipuric) does pick up an injury.

“It will show us whether James can fit into that spot or someone like Josh Navidi, we know he can play seven.

“They’re two guys that are very hungry for an opportunity.

“Rhys Carre comes onto the bench as well so we’re just keeping everyone on their toes a little bit.”
