The cheeky message Liverpool's Sadio Mane sent to Gini Wijnaldum after Man City shootout miss

Liverpool failed to follow up their Champions League success as they fell to defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.

The Reds were beaten 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Pep Guardiola's side at Wembley.

Gini Wijnaldum saw his spot-kick saved by Chilean shot-stopper Claudio Bravo, as Brazil's Gabriel Jesus stepped up to rifle the winner past his compatriot Alisson.

Following the penalty miss Wijnaldum revealed the cheeky text message he received from team-mate Sadio Mane.

The Senegal international, who was watching on from home ahead of his return to training on Monday, sent the Dutch international a playful text regarding the costly miss.

Speaking during Liverpool's photo-call earlier this week, the 28-year-old Dutchman said: "He (Mane) just sent me a text 'Gini' with question marks. And I said 'Yeah Sadio I know it's not good'."

"And he was like 'yeah because of you the team lost' and everything, but he was joking.

"I said the same you know. So yeah I accepted it, I said 'Yes Sadio you are right!'"

Mane has been making a nuisance of himself this week, upon his return to Melwood he was captured comically berating Andy Robertson for his performance against Pep Guardiola's side.

The 27-year-old forward told the full-back: "You play very bad yesterday without me, because I always help you."

Liverpool fans will hope Mane can pick up some minutes on Friday as the Reds host Norwich City at Anfield in the Premier League's opening fixture.

The striker finished last season on 22 goals and was joint top scorer alongside team-mate Mohamed Salah and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng.
