The cheapest UK supermarket - and it's not Tesco or Asda

No matter which supermarket you shop at, chances are, you'll want the best deals possible when it comes to food, drink and household items.

We all have our favourite supermarkets - whether it be Asda, Aldi, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's or somewhere else - and we all have our ideas about which is the best value for money.

But a new study has discovered which supermarket was actually the cheapest in July of this year.

Consumer experts Which? compared a shopping trolley packed with 167 items (the original 85 plus 82 more), including own-brand items, such as eggs, milk and bread.

Pasta and some branded items like Hovis bread were also included in the price test.

The analysis found that Aldi came out on top, with a basket total of £78.50.

Lidl wasn't too far behind, as its basket totalled £79.46 - just 94p more than Aldi.

Waitrose's basket was most expensive, with a final total of £122.47, and Ocado wasn't far off with a basket price of £117.85.

Here's the full price breakdown for supermarket prices in July:

  • Aldi - £78.50
  • Lidl - £79.46
  • Asda - £88.29
  • Tesco - £98.48
  • Morrisons - £99.30
  • Sainsbury's - £103.26
  • Ocado - £117.85
  • Waitrose - £122.47

According to Which?: "Groceries with the biggest price differences included own-label prawns (where there was a £3.34 difference between Aldi and Waitrose) and own-label chicken drumsticks, which had a £1.48 difference. When it came to branded groceries, the biggest difference was in a popular pizza brand, which cost 75p more at Waitrose than Aldi."
